Warranty and care

Sanding and finishing work comes with a 2-year warranty. This page sets out what the warranty covers and what it doesn't, and how to look after a lacquered or oiled floor so that it lasts.

Warranty terms

The warranty is valid for 2 years from handover and covers defects caused by the work done.

The warranty covers

  • Lacquer peeling or lifting
  • Coats of lacquer not bonding properly to each other
  • Oil not curing, even though the care instructions have been followed
  • Visible sanding defects. The surface is assessed standing up, in normal light. Please report them at handover if possible, but the craftsman will also inspect a defect noticed later.

Not covered

  • Scratches and dents from use (furniture without felt pads, pet claws, heels, sand) and normal wear
  • Water damage and the consequences of leaks
  • Gaps, cupping and cracks caused by indoor relative humidity outside 30–60%
  • Filler in gaps cracking because of the seasonal movement of wood
  • Wet cleaning an oiled floor, or laying rugs on it, before the time the craftsman has given
  • Cleaning and care products not compatible with the care instructions
  • The top layer of engineered flooring coming away because of a factory glue defect
  • Movement and gaps caused by the subfloor or underfloor heating
  • Natural change in the colour of wood from sunlight
  • Natural colour differences in wood, including on toned or replaced boards

Conditions

  1. The craftsman explains at handover how to look after your lacquered or oiled floor. The warranty assumes the floor is cared for according to these instructions.
  2. The warranty runs for 2 years from the day the work is handed over. When reporting a defect, tell us when and where the work was done.
  3. Report a defect as soon as possible: call +372 5602 5888 or write to info@parketinhionta.eu.

The warranty does not limit your statutory rights.

Indoor climate: humidity 30–60%

Wood moves with the humidity of the air. Keep indoor relative humidity at 30–60% all year round, and if possible at least 40% during the heating season. Room temperature should be about 18–24°C.

In the Finnish winter, heating dries the indoor air. A humidifier from the start of the heating season, and avoiding excessive airing, help reduce gaps. A simple humidity meter, or hygrometer, shows whether the humidity is right.

The gaps that open between boards in the winter heating season are a natural property of wood. They partly close again when the air is more humid. They are not a defect in the finish.

With underfloor heating, the surface temperature of a wooden floor must not exceed 27°C, including under rugs.

Everyday care

These rules apply to both lacquered and oiled floors.

  • Put felt pads on furniture legs and a doormat by the front door. Sand wears the finish like sandpaper.
  • Chair castors should be suitable for wooden floors.
  • Rubber- or latex-backed rugs and mats can stain the floor.
  • Do not use a steam mop, a wet cloth, all-purpose cleaners or polishes. Wipe up water straight away.

Caring for lacquered parquet

Lacquer needs little care, but it wears in walkways over time.

  • After the last coat of lacquer you can walk carefully on the floor after 6–8 hours and bring back light furniture the next day. Rugs and heavy furniture after about a week.
  • Clean with a vacuum cleaner and a slightly damp mop. Use a pH-neutral cleaner for lacquered floors.

Caring for an oiled floor

An oiled floor needs a little more attention, but it can be looked after and repaired section by section.

  • An oiled floor takes up to 24 hours to dry in normal conditions.
  • Do not wet-clean the floor or lay rugs until the oil has cured. Depending on the oil, this takes from 5 days to 3 weeks. The craftsman tells you the exact time at handover.
  • After that, clean with a vacuum cleaner and a damp mop, using cleaning products made for oiled floors. Do not use all-purpose cleaners, ammonia or vinegar.
  • When the surface starts to look dull or dry, it is time for maintenance oiling with maintenance oil made for oiled floors. At home usually every 1–2 years, more often in kitchens and hallways.
